In this intermediate level course we'll explore the magic of portraiture in acrylic. Working from photo references and life models, you’ll learn strategies for measurement, sketching, and rendering to create lifelike portraits in your own unique way.

Week 1- grid method monochrome portrait from printed reference

Week 2- color theory crash course, glaze color on first project

Week 3- begin painting from a traced reference image

Week 4- finish the project started on week two

Week 5 - female live model

Week 6 - male live model

I recommend you purchase the highest quality paint that fits within your budget, avoiding student grade paint if at all possible. Ideally the paints we use should be professional quality heavy body acrylic, since it's the easiest to manage. Liquitex and Golden are great widely available brands, but we'll work with whatever you can get!

While it's not imperative, I have a great personal adoration of dioxazine purple. So if you can manage an additional color, that's the one I'd choose.

-Brushes (I recommend getting a small variety of shapes and sizes, so you can figure out which you like best. Angled and flat are my personal favorites)

-Palette knife

-Palette (I use a white thrifted dinner plate, and it works perfectly for me)

-Pad of 9x12 canvas paper

-11x14 canvas panel

-Painters tape

-Water basin (a recycled jar works great)

-Pencil & Eraser

-Rag or paper towels (any piece of absorbent cloth is just fine)
