Students will be provided with all materials and supplies to make one accordion-style journal using the eco print process. Eco printing is a form of natural dyeing. It is an ecologically sustainable form of steam contact printing, with plant material, on natural fiber fabrics or paper. No inks or paints are used; all the the color and patterns come directly from the leaves and other plant materials.
Students will be instructed on folding and cutting high quality pre-mordanted watercolor paper and then on the eco printing process. Since the paper will still be wet, they will receive a demonstration on ways to bind the book with their own materials at home. They will leave with the journal and a set of instructions for repeating the process.
Bring a snack and a drink if you like. You will have time to eat while the journals are steaming and we go over the syllabus. Wear practical clothing and shoes for working with plant material and hot water.
