Plein Air Painting with Carly Ellis

This outdoor painting class is designed for artists with, or without, plein air experience, who are looking to deepen their practice in a natural setting. Students will explore techniques in composition, color mixing and brushwork while responding to the unique challenges and inspiration of painting on location. You are welcome to use the medium you are most comfortable with.

Each section will take place in a different scenic spot, either at Manito Park or the Finch Arboretum. Artists are encouraged to observe closely, paint expressively, and build confidence working outdoors.

Supply List- Plein Air, Watercolor, Acrylic or Oil (This list will be emailed to you when you register)

*As always, I recommend the Art Salvage to every artist, its a great place*

Besides art supplies, everyone should bring:

● Water

● A snack if desired

● Sunscreen

Oil

● Paint I recommend gamblin artist colors, 37ml tubes will be sufficient

• titanium white
• cadmium yellow medium
• naphthol red
• phthalo blue

● Oil Pallet or Pallet Paper glass pallets are great but need cleaning. Pallet paper is great for beginning and plein air.

● Oil Medium

• A Slow drying Medium: Linseed oil, walnut oil or a solvent free safflower oil (You can get a big container of boiled linseed oil from Ace Hardware for about $10)
• A Fast drying Medium: Galkyde Oil or Liquin (This is crucial for Plein air)

● Brushes designed for oil or acrylic will work as long as they are not too soft like ones meant for watercolor.

• #20 flat brush (Large, over 1”)
• #12 flat brush (Medium, between .5” - 1”)
• #4 flat or round brush (Small, for detail)

● Pallet Knife This is recommended, but you can get away without one, or a plastic one

● Brush cleaning method I use a silicoil brush tank which can be easily made from a jar, odorless mineral spirits and some wire

● Canvas or Panel I recommend between 8x10” and 12x16”

● Disposable Gloves Optional, to keep your hands from coming into contact with the paint

● Rags any old rags or fabric will do. Baby wipes are great too

Acrylic

● Paint Golden open acrylic is supposed to be good for Plein Air as it dries slower, but I haven’t tried for myself

● Pallet or Pallet Paper

● Water either in a container or spray bottle

● Brushes

• #20 flat brush (Large, over 1”)
• #12 flat brush (Medium, between .5” - 1”)
• #4 flat or round brush (Small, for detail)

● Canvas or Panel I recommend between 8x10” and 12x16”

● Rags any old rags or fabric will do. Baby wipes are great too

Watercolor (or Gouache)

● Paint Any watercolor palette or tubes. Lots of places have plein air or travel sets.

Needed colors:

• White
• Yellow
• Red
• Blue

● Pallet or Pallet Paper

● Water either in a container or spray bottle

● Brushes soft brushes for watercolor

• #20 flat brush (Large, over 1”)
• #12 flat brush (Medium, between .5” - 1”)
• #4 flat or round brush (Small, for detail)

● Canvas, Panel, Paper I recommend between 8x10” and 12x16” a sketchbook would even work

● Rags any old rags or fabric will do. Baby wipes are great too
