Relief Print Fukuro-toji with Mel Antuna Hewitt

In this class participants will learn how to carve a linoleum block for relief printing, print the block, and then bind the printings into a Fukuro-toji (known in the west as Japanese stab binding). Individuals will be shown how to prep their linoleum, draw/transfer images to their linoleum block, and proper carving technique to facilitate dimension and keep hands from hurting. Students will print enough of their block to give one to each participant. They will then each bind their collection of prints into a book. After a small dive into historical examples of fukuro-toji, historical and contemporary sewing designs, and some bookbinding vocabulary, participants will be shown how to create a template for sewing hole locations, how to transfer the template to the book, and the sequence for sewing the book together. At the end of the two week class students will walk away with a collection of prints bound into a one-of-a-kind book.

In the first week, students will carve an image into a linoleum block. They will then print enough of their individual block so that each student will get one. Prints will be allowed to dry for a week before the next session.

During week two, students will be exposed to historical examples of fukuro-toji. They will then fold and collate the printed images, make the covers for their binding, and then bind the book.
