Sepia is a warm tan color that is seen a lot in nature. It an excellent medium for birds and animal portraits portraying different coats of feather or fur and exploring the textures of nature. Working much like watercolor in line and washes, your brush and pen nib are the language you describe with. Sepia is a fun sketching media that lets you discover more ways to enjoy your drawing power.


Sepia Ink Supply List

  • Multimedia sketchbook or watercolor paper
  • Small palette
  • Container for water
  • #8 round brush or any other small brushes you have
  • Crow quill pen for line and drawing, not a calligraphy pen nib
  • Paper towels
  • #2B pencils
  • Kneaded eraser and a soft white vinyl eraser (like Factis)


Bring references of simple projects, some with texture. For example: head shots of animals, stuffed toy animals, birds, or a bit of landscape to explore techniques.


Sue will bring the ink. It is made from walnut ink crystals. Bring a small sealed container with a lid to store your ink in. It needs to hold a tablespoon and be very watertight.
